Speak Trainer ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our application at speaktrainer.app.
1. Information We Collect
We collect only what is necessary to provide our service:
- Account data: your name and email address when you register
- Learning data: your flashcard progress, session results, and streaks
- Settings: your language preferences and study configuration
- Payment data: billing is handled entirely by Stripe — we never see or store your card details
2. How We Use Your Information
- To provide and improve the Speak Trainer learning experience
- To sync your progress across devices
- To send transactional emails (password reset, payment confirmation)
- To process subscription payments via Stripe
We do not sell your personal data. We do not use your data for advertising.
3. Voice and Audio Data
When you practice pronunciation, your voice is recorded for the duration of the exercise (typically 2–5 seconds). This audio is:
- Transmitted securely to OpenAI Whisper API for speech-to-text transcription
- Not stored on our servers — audio is processed in real time and discarded immediately after transcription
- Transmitted to OpenAI (United States) for processing via the Whisper API. OpenAI retains audio for up to 30 days for safety monitoring, after which it is permanently deleted — audio is not used to train OpenAI models (openai.com/privacy)
- Not shared with any other third party
Only the resulting text transcript and a pronunciation accuracy score are saved to your account.
4. Analytics
We use PostHog to understand how users interact with the app. This includes page views, feature usage events, and session behavior. PostHog does not record audio or personal communications. All analytics data is used solely to improve the app. You can learn more at posthog.com/privacy.

Your data is stored on encrypted servers hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS) in the us-east-1 region (Northern Virginia, USA). AWS infrastructure meets data protection standards equivalent to PIPEDA requirements. Passwords are hashed and never stored in plain text. We use HTTPS for all data transmission.
7. Data Retention
We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. You may request deletion of your account and all associated data at any time by contacting us.

You have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Request correction of inaccurate data
- Delete your account and all associated data — directly in the app via Settings → Delete Account
- Export your data in a portable format

9. Children's Privacy
Speak Trainer is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes via email or a notice in the app. Continued use of the service after changes constitutes acceptance.
11. Canadian Users — PIPEDA
If you are located in Canada, the following applies in accordance with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA):
- Your data is stored on AWS servers in the United States (us-east-1). By using Speak Trainer, you consent to this cross-border transfer.
- For pronunciation evaluation, voice recordings are transmitted to OpenAI (United States) in real time and are not stored on our servers.
- You may withdraw consent and request deletion of all your data at any time via Settings → Delete Account, or by emailing support@speaktrainer.app.
- You have the right to access, correct, and obtain a copy of your personal data.
